Novak Djokovic’s Watch

When watching a Novak Djokovic match, there won’t be a watch on his wrist like some other top players. However, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have his own endorsement deal with a well-known watch company. Whether he is hoisting another trophy or showing up for an event, there is almost always a watch on his left wrist. But what watch does Djokovic actually wear? That’s what I will go through in this post.

What watch does Novak Djokovic wear? The Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic currently has a sponsorship with the watch company Seiko and is usually wearing the Astron GPS Solar. He has been spotted wearing several different options from the company and is one of their top athlete endorsers worldwide at this time.

Why Doesn’t Djokovic Wear His Watch During Play?

There are a growing number of tennis players who wear watches when they play tennis all the time. A lot of that comes down to having a sponsorship with certain companies that push a good amount of exposure. Some players opt to not wear a watch while playing, because it could potentially get in the way.

More often than not, two-handed backhand players are more heavily affected by a watch on the wrist than a one-handed backhand player. Since Djokovic relies heavily on a strong backhand, that could be a big reason why he does not wear a watch on the court. He already has wristbands on both wrists, which makes it all the more difficult.

Djokovic’ Relationship With Seiko

Novak Djokovic first became an ambassador for Seiko in 2014. He was already a very established player on tour, and the relationship has been beneficial for everyone since. The company has always had some connection to the sport of tennis, so landing one of the best players of his generation seems was huge. Having exposure deep into all of the majors helps to grow brand awareness.

The relationship goes beyond just watches. Seiko has helped to assist the Novak Djokovic Foundation in many ways. He’s helping out young people and staying true to his foundation has been a big part of his focus off the court. Djokovic is one of the few top tennis players who did not come from the greatest of situations, so giving back is very important to him.

It should not be a shocker that Djokovic held out for a sponsor to provide that level of support. Djokovic benefits financially from the relationship with Seiko, but he enjoys turning it into a positive for others as well.

The focus of the Novak Djokovic Foundation is mostly on early childhood education. By putting together strong building blocks in the beginning, children are set up for success later on in life. Seiko lines itself up as a company with many of the same values as Djokovic, which makes it a solid partnership overall.

Seiko Watches Worn By Novak Djokovic

Since Djokovic mostly wears watches off the court, he tends to switch things up depending on the occasion. As far as the most popular ones are concerned, the Premier Kinetic Perpetual and Sportura Chronograph are two of his favorites.

These are two classic models from the company, and with versatility, they can fit many different occasions. Djokovic has stated in interviews that he is a bit of a stickler for making sure that his outfits match, so he owns different variations of the same watches for any occasion.

Perhaps his favorite model though is the Seiko Astron. There is a limited edition version with his name on it that has turned into a hot collector watch. In one of the most memorable matches in tennis history, Djokovic wore this watch during the trophy ceremony when he beat Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. It became one of the most-watched finishes to a major tournament in quite some time, and all eyes were on the winner as he gave his speech and hoisted the trophy.

Djokovic As A Marketing Figure

Despite wearing some watches that are very expensive to the average consumer, Seiko seems to use Djokovic a little differently than some of the other top watch manufacturers out there. Instead of putting him in watches that are insanely priced, they keep things relatively attainable for the everyday person.

For example, many of the Seiko Astron watches he has worn in the past fall between $1000 and $2000. That is still a lot of money for a watch, but many more total units are moveable at that price. Rolex and Richard Mille, just to name a few examples, tend to put their top players in watches that are sometimes worth five or even six figures.

These different approaches to marketing are part of watch sponsorships in general. Tennis is one of the biggest worldwide sports where a player can wear a watch during play. That is why so many players, even those well outside the top 10, have watch deals with leading brands. The goal is to build brand recognition, so even if a person can’t afford what their favorite player is wearing, they might opt for something else.

The Future Of Djokovic & Seiko Relationship

At this point, it looks like the partnership between the player and the watch manufacturer is as strong as ever. It helps that Djokovic comes off as very genuine as a real fan of the brand. He stood firm and opted not to wear the watch while playing, but casually, he has no problem completing any outfit with a watch from his personal collection.

One thing to keep an eye on is that his deal currently runs through 2020. Compared to other top tennis players, his watch endorsement deal is a bit low. Seiko will need to make sure that they fight off competitors, so they do not run the risk of losing one of their highest-profile athletes. Quite a few watch companies will heavily pursue Djokovic if he becomes a free agent.

More than likely, he will be looking for a deal that will run through the rest of his prime. It will not be a cheap signing for the company, but they have heavily invested in him already, so it would be surprising to see them lose their top tennis player at this point.

Spotting Djokovic In Different Watches

The best way to view many of the models Djokovic wears is to go to Seiko’s official website. They have a page devoted to the models he wears, as well as other relevant information.

Once the model is known, shop around to find the best price. Watch prices can vary quite a bit, so there is no reason to spend considerably more money if a good deal is out there.
