What is U.S. Open Tennis?

The U.S. Open Tennis Championships is a well-known tennis tournament that is held each year in Queens, New York. This prestigious affair is very popular among all tennis enthusiasts, and between 650,000 and 700,000 fans are expected to attend these events in any given year. However, the 2019 U.S Open had a record-breaking number of attendees, as there was a total of 737,872. The US Open lasts for two weeks and begins on the last Monday of August, with the middle weekend occurring just before Labor Day, an important United States holiday. Originally called the U.S. National Championship, the U.S. Open Tennis is an esteemed tournament that is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world.

In 2018, in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open, USTA introduced a new logo for this special event. This new logo was created to represent America’s Grand Slam over the next 50 years. A popular and experienced graphic design firm, Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv, created this elegant and contemporary replacement of the flaming ball logo that was released in 1997. The new logo has replaced this “flaming ball,” and professional tennis fans from around the world love the new logo. This new logo was designed to create a visual identity for the tournament that will last far into the future.

The USTA’s Chief Marketing Officer, Amy Choyne, is absolutely thrilled with the new logo’s energy and boldness, and she feels that this updated logo does a better job of capturing and expressing just how dynamic the U.S. Open is. Amy and many others are looking forward to the next 50 years, as they feel that this new logo adequately depicts the greatness of the U.S. Open, even greater than the previous logo did. 

Despite the fact that many people believe that the 2018 U.S. Open Tennis logo is phenomenal as well as “spot on,” there were nearly as many of those who are somehow involved in professional tennis that dislike this new logo. Many who dislike the new logo stated that the logo was “cheesy” and that it fails to properly represent the true level of prestige that the U.S. Open exudes. Despite what everyone’s opinions are, the latest logo is here to stay for a while and many people are really excited about this. 

The U.S. Open Tennis Logo & Its Changes Throughout the Years

When the U.S. National Championship made its debut in 1881, there was no logo. In fact, it wasn’t until 1997 that the U.S. Open developed its first logo, even though their name changed in 1968. There have been a number of logos between 1997 and 2018, and there have been mixed reviews of each one. Most of these logos have been unofficial, however.

Out of all the U.S. Open logos over the years, many people voted for the logo that they liked least, which happened to be the one that was introduced in  2006. However, this wasn’t an official logo, yet many people were grateful that this wasn’t the official logo of the U.S. Open. Over the years, there have also been different colors and different variations of the U.S. Open logos. Fans also had their opinions regarding their favorite versions, although everyone’s opinion was different.

Previous U.S. Open Tennis Logos

There have been U.S. Open professional tennis matches since the 1800s, even though the name change didn’t occur until the 1960s, and the very first logo featured made its debut in 1997. This particular logo, of course, depicted a flaming yellow ball that creators at the time believed best represented the U.S. Open. Even then, with the very first logo, not everyone agreed that it adequately represented the U.S. Open, and some fans referred to the logo as “lame” while others who loved the logo believed it to be “perfect.” Unfortunately, there is always going to be those who enjoy a logo and those who don’t, as everyone has their own specific tastes. 

When the current U.S. Open logo was unveiled, the 2018 US Open began on Monday, Aug. 27 of that year, and ran through Sunday, Sept. 9. A full schedule of US Open 50th Anniversary events was released that summer and was available for those following it to know exactly what the lineup was. 

The update of the U.S. Open Tennis Logo was a major change that many fans and supporters felt was for the absolute best. Not only do many agree that the new logo is immensely more modern and better depicts tennis, but they love the colors and they feel that it was overdue for a logo update. So, since you’re a fan of professional tennis, you will likely encounter the new logo quite often. If you adore the new logo, then you should fit right in with the various others who feel that introducing this new logo was a very smart idea.
